The Aegis NVX is a portable solid-state drive that encrypts everything written to it, on the drive itself, in real time. Encryption is 256-bit AES-XTS, and the key never leaves the hardware. You unlock the drive by tapping a PIN into the keypad built into its case, then plug it into whatever you like over USB-C.
Because the PIN goes into the drive and not the computer, there is nothing to install: no software, no app, no driver. Host malware and keyloggers have nothing to capture, and the drive behaves the same way whether you plug it into Windows, macOS, Linux, or a machine you have never seen before. It is genuinely OS- and platform-independent, which is uncommon in this category.
For anyone issuing drives to staff, the admin controls are the point. You can set a separate admin PIN and a user PIN, force a user to enrol their own PIN on first use, and lock a drive to read-only so people can carry data without altering it. Enter the wrong PIN too many times and the brute-force defence wipes the encryption key, taking the data with it.
The Aegis line is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validated, which is the language procurement teams and regulated buyers actually ask for. If a validated, keypad-locked drive walks out of the office, you are in a very different position under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme than if it were a plain USB stick.
Our take: this is for organisations that move sensitive files on physical media and need to show the media was protected. If everything already syncs through Microsoft 365 or managed cloud storage, you probably do not need it. At 1TB the NVX sits in the middle of the range, enough for working sets and backups without paying for capacity you will not fill.
